Padmashri Ayurvedic Therapeutic oils

Among the most profound and effective healing modalities in Ayurveda is the application of therapeutic oils. Unlike therapeutic massage in the West, Ayurvedic massage is an original technique from ancient India in which medicated oil is applied to the body or affected part.

Unlike massage oils used in the West, Ayurvedic oils are specially crafted medicinal substances that can be used both internally and externally. The traditional procedure to make such oils is labor intensive and requires the skill of a master Ayurvedic pharmacist, who slowly decocts medicinal plants and other natural substances into heat-stable oils at low temperatures.

The total ingredients being used for the preparation can be mainly classified into three categories:

(A) One group contains all the dry herbs/roots/barks etc. which are disintegrated into small pieces are boiled in water for a specified period of time and the resultant water decoction is filtered and transferred to the preparation vessel.

(B) Medicinal Leaves – In the case of medicinal leaves, its juice is extracted and is also mixed with the above water decoction.

(C)  There are certain herbs/roots which are required to be powdered and added on to the above mix. In some preparations milk, whey or yoghurt is also added on the mix.

The required quantity of Base Oil, which is either Sesame Oil or coconut oil, is then added to the above mix and the total mixture is being heated up.  During the process, continuous stirring is essential either in the clockwise or anti clockwise direction. Chanting of mantras during the cooking process increases the healing vibrations of the oils. The heating process at 60 degrees has to continue until the oil reaches its criticality. Criticality of the oil is the time at which the entire water content is evaporated from the oil. The time may vary from 45 to 60 days. The critical point of the oil preparation is very important – it has to be exact. While preparing the oil, over heating (for saving time) is not permitted as it will spoil the preparation. A slight change will deteriorate the quality of oil. The aroma and color are crucial points for determining the criticality.

The resultant oil is then filtered and transferred to another copper vessel for settlement. Once it is settled and cooled by natural method, the oil is packed and has a shelf life 5-10 years without any addition of chemical preservatives.

Traditionally sesame oil is used as base oil in a majority of the Ayurvedic preparations due to its anti-oxidant properties. It also has the property to penetrate through the subtle channels of the body. At times coconut oil is substituted due to its palatability. However coconut oil is mostly used for external application oils meant for children as it is comparatively light.
